A Brief History of Leeds Festival Chorus

Brief

In this major commission from Leeds Festival Chorus, one of the most prestigious choirs in the north of England, we were asked to produce a complete marketing package on the occasion of the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the first formation of the Chorus in 1858, when Queen Victoria opened the newly-built Leeds Town Hall.

Solution

After consultation with Chorus Conductor and Artistic Adviser Simon Wright and members of the Chorus, it was decided to research, write and produce a booklet to be entitled Celebration 2008 which would be distributed free to audience members at concerts and at the Opera in the Park event which is organised each July by Leeds City Council. In addition, a cover was designed for a CD to be distributed with the booklet, and news releases were sent out to engage the interest of the local media. Meerkat Publications and Design researched the Chorus’s history in depth.

Outcome

The booklet, containing a congratulatory message from Sir Mark Elder CBE, was widely distributed along with the CD in a cover designed by us, attracting much admiration and praise for its accessible style and its use of historic photographs of the great composers associated with the Chorus. There was excellent coverage in the media.
